Runs at a premium as Noblesville edges Westfield to sweep HCC series

The REPORTER

After the first game of the series on Thursday night was delayed 71 minutes for lightning detected within the range that the Westfield Shamrocks and Noblesville Millers could safely begin play at Dunker Field, Noblesville had one of its better hitting performances to win 11-4.

Friday night at Shamrock Field was a little different. Starting pitchers Beckett Doane of Noblesville and Westfield’s Luke Collinsworth both struck out 10 batters. But it was the Millers overcoming an early first inning run from the ‘Rocks to come away with a 2-1 road win, sweeping the two-game Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.

Doane started off shaky, hitting Ethan Colling with the second pitch. Colling was driven in on a two-out double from Beck Jordan for the early 1-0 lead.

Noblesville got to Collinsworth in the top of the third. Trevor Corbett drew a one-out walk and moved to second on an Aiden Reynolds single to center. Cole Schott tied the game 1-1, lining a base hit to left to score Corbett.

Corbett came through with two down in the fourth, scoring Joe Glander who walked, for a 2-1 score that wound up as the final.

The two runs, both earned, three hits and five walks chased Luke Collinsworth. Despite striking out 10 Millers, James Kovacs threw the final three innings, giving up just one hit and fanning four.

Beckett Doane got into a groove from the second inning on, giving up just two total hits and one walk while sending down 10 Westfield hitters by strikeout.

Sixth-ranked Westfield (10-6, 4-4 HCC) has lost five in a row. The Shamrocks get the rest of the weekend off before hosting No. 9 Pendleton Heights (11-2) on Monday.

Noblesville (10-8, 5-3 HCC) has now won five straight and hosts Lebanon (2-12) today for Senior Day at noon.
