Westfield softball splits early games

The Westfield softball team split a pair of games to start the week.

On Monday, the Shamrocks won an all-county game at Hamilton Heights 8-4. Makayla Watson scored the game’s first run in the first inning after Chloe Tanner reached on an error.

Westfield extended its lead with three runs in the second inning. Sofia Easterhaus led off with a triple, then got home on Watson’s base hit. Ava Kainrath came up next and sent a home run into left field to give the ‘Rocks a 4-0 lead.

Tanner singled in Watson in the fifth inning to put Westfield ahead 5-0. The Huskies got on the board in the fifth inning when Kamryn Rhoton hit a two-run double, bringing in Audrey Cain and Taya Trosper.

The Shamrocks added three runs in the seventh inning. Easterhaus led off with a double, then moved to third base on Watson’s center field double. Kainrath singled in Easterhaus, then Avery Kurth came in to run for her. Tanner came up next and her center field single got both Watson and Kurth home.

McKenzie Jackson hit a two-run homer for Heights in the seventh, also scoring Hailey Hall. Trosper followed that with a center field double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly, but a groundout ended the game.

Watson and Tanner both batted 3-for-4, while Easterhaus and Kainrath both had two hits. Tanner got the pitching win. Rhoton finished with two hits.

Heights is 10-7 and plays next Tuesday at Logansport.

Westfield hosted Zionsville in a Tuesday Hoosier Crossroads Conference game and lost 5-0. The ‘Rocks were held to one hit, a fourth-inning double by Watson.

Westfield is 3-2 in HCC play and 9-6 overall. The Shamrocks play Thursday at Roncalli.
